Second quarter is a time for creative
expression of seasonal traditions and crafts.
Students in all grade levels have explored the use of a
variety of tactile materials and decoration.
Eighth Grade printed winter
themes as a subtractive multicolor print project. Many
students donated cards of the print for the Student Council
Bake Sale.
Students used two colors of clay to
form turkeys which were then glazed.
The Class of 2009 is also working on
designs for the tile wall project which will be installed in
the cafeteria. The theme is “Wellness” and each student did
a drawing which will be made into a ceramic tile.
Seventh Grade constructed Elf
“found “wood object additive sculptures and painted them.
They also did a one color subtractive print some of which
were also donated to the Student Council Bake Sale. They are
completing tessellation drawings.
6B and 6A learned the coil
method of clay building. They are completing a long process
of building with papier mache to create penguins.
Fifth grade used the pinch pot
method to form “storyteller dolls” of the southwest after
completing drawings of Native American designs. They studied
the monumental sculpture of Claes Oldenburg and designed
their own proposal for a public sculpture of man made
objects. They have begun their puppet unit.
Fourth Grade was invited to make
placemats for the Niles Senior Center’s Thanksgiving dinner.
They also were asked by Home Depot to make ornaments for a
tree to represent Culver School at the store here in Niles.
They decorated a recycled computer mouse and drew a winter
scene on a recycled CD.They completed watercolor leaf
symmetrical paintings.
Third Grade designed props for
their music program. They constructed clothespin dolls and
created radial designs like the hex signs of the
Pennsylvania Dutch.

learn about overlap and horizon line. They also learned
Native American symbols to use in a second painting They
made “Worry Dolls” with wrapped yarn and created a splotch
print that was made into a tree or and elf
First Grade made two
dimensional and three dimensional teddy bears. They created
turkeys with clay and feathers. Some practiced weaving and
all created gingerbread collages.
